Chairman Eamon DeValera Collins is the undisputed boss of the Irish Catholic 15th Ward, chairman of the city council’s zoning committee, and the preeminent dealmaker in a city of dealmakers. The Chairman has no use for ideology or big ideas. To him, politics has always been a business, a means to enrich himself and his allies by providing favors that are expected to be returned. If you need to make a backroom arrangement, or even make a man disappear, the Chairman’s your man. If he’s not, it’s almost guaranteed that Collins, or one of his cronies, will be happy to make a referral…for a price. Big city ward politics is like that—or at least it was. Back then, the pols and their Mob allies were in charge, and only those who made trouble had trouble, including men who wound up washed in blood.
When the Chairman finds himself under seemingly irresistible pressure from federal law enforcement and from those who, under the guise of “reform,” would interfere with his way of running the city, a mayor will be indicted, a murderer will go free, and the changing of the guard will take place. The voters? They, as usual, asked no questions and did what they were told.
The Chairman: A Novel of
Customer reviews for The Chairman by Mark M. Quinn:
This fascinating historic novel weaves an gripping story line through an insightful glimpse at urban politics over the past 30 years. The author adeptly takes the reader into the backrooms where deals are really made, and shows how those deals are then spun in the media. Clearly, Mr. Quinn has a terrific grasp of how "Machine" politics work at all levels today, as well how things have developed through the recent decades. I'm looking forward to his next work!

This is an awfully good glimpse into the political machine: the people who run (and profit by) it; the footsoldiers who make it work (and profit by it); the business men who use it (and profit by it); the shakedown artist anxious to play the game (and proift by it); and the reformers (who just may get steamrolled by it). Against this masterful setting, Quinn tells the age-old story of a man at the peak of his powers trying to hang on in a changing world against the inevitable assaults from within and outside his organization. A must read for political junkies, and just a plain old great read for the rest of us!

Machine politics is a tough business filled with people who put far higher values on power and money than on honor, friendship, or the lives of those they find troublesome. Atop this maelstrom sits Chairman Eamon DeValera Collins, formerly undisputed boss of the Irish-Catholic 15
th
Ward and now the man who controls the entire city, where he finds himself surrounded by opportunists, amateurs, criminals, thieves, and cold-blooded killers. Those he can trust are few; those who would attempt to use their friendship with him to line their pockets and eliminate their enemies are many. But only one former ally is tough, or crazy, enough to directly challenge his leadership. This challenger finds, however, that the Chairman will stop at nothing to teach such an upstart a lesson he, or she, will never forget.

Customer reviews for The Chairman's Challenge by Mark M. Quinn:
Once again, Quinn has produced a novel that works on several layers: an insider's primer on real politics as practiced in thie most political of big cities and a compelling tale of greed and ambition. The old Chairman finds his position threatened by the greed and ambition of those around him. Managing greed and ambition is his stock in trade, of course, but the levels of greed and naked ambition leave the outcome in doubt until the very end. (I will confess that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and jumped ahead to see how things came out!)

This book opens with a bang and builds to a satisfying finish. I couldn't read the last 50 pages fast enough.
The characters are well-developed and the settings perfectly familiar. The author is fast becoming one of my favorites.
